8/9/20 9 AM - "Motorists on the roadway should not stop or slow down to take pictures or see the fire as it causes congestion and unsafe driving conditions. Expect to encounter slow moving vehicles along the Lake Almanor area on highway 89 and highway 36. This will be the last update of the Stump Fire as the has been no significant changes in fire activity. For further updates follow Inciweb. Weather: Hot and dry conditions persist with isolated storms possible through the weekend. Current Situation: Firefighters will continue to secure containment lines today to keep the Stump Fire within its current footprint. Large dead and down trees within the interior of the fire perimeter will smolder over the next several days, and possibly weeks, as fire activity and heat intensity declines. Fire line suppression repair and mop up has begun. Smoke will persist as the fire smolders and activity declines. Fire managers will employ tactics that safely engage fire while prioritizing firefighter and public safety and protecting values at risk. Life safety will always remain the number one priority. COVID-19 mitigations are being taken to limit exposure risks to firefighters and the public, per CDC guidelines."

From INCIWEB: "This fire is burning on Lassen National Forest Lands near the junction of state highways 36 and 172 near Child's Meadows, west of Chester. "
"The fire in the Lassen National Forest is burning in heavy timber near Highway 36 and Highway 172 on Doe Mountain in Tehama County. The Stump Fire was reported around 4:30 p.m. Saturday and was 40 acres but it had grown to 65 acres within an hour with a moderate rate of spread. There were no structures threatened." - Record Searchlight
The fire was first reported around 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1st, by a customer at the Mill Creek Resort. When John Frehse of Company 20 and Joe Van Meter, owner of Mill Creek Resort, arrived on scene and reported to Cal-Fire, it had burned approximately 2 acres.
Because the fire was on Forest Service land, the USFS took the lead, dubbing it the "Stump Fire" because at first they thought it was at the Stump Ranch along Wilson Lake Road (a bit less than 7 miles away as the crow flies).
The fire began on the west slope of Doe Mountain, burning toward the ridge line, then topping it and starting down the other side. The topography is heavily wooded and precipitously steep.
Air tankers and helicopters supported ground crews all Saturday afternoon and into the evening.
The Google Earth image with red squares illustrating the burn areas was provided on Aug. 2nd by a resident with a relative working at the Forest Service.
The fire started about 4 1/2 air miles (as the crow flies) from Mineral; about 2 from Mill Creek Resort, and less than one from Child's Meadow/Highland Ranch Resort. The map below shows the approximate perimeter of the fire at 200 acres on August 1st.
Whenever a fire is this close, folks should be prepared to evacuate. Have your most precious (portable) possessions, medicines, food and water, emergency supplies, etc. organized and ready to load. Whether it will actually be necessary to pack up and leave depends on wind direction and speed.
