PARK FIRE NEWS
EVACUATION WARNING LIFTED FOR MINERAL, BUT STAY VIGILANT
►Park Fire
According to the CAL FIRE Incident Report for the park Fire, as of 08/26/2024 8:54 PM, the Park Fire is 85% Contained. 429,603 Acres have burned and 2,158 Personnel are still assigned to the Park Fire. Resources assigned also include 4 Helicopters, 54 Engines, 72 Dozers, 104 Water Tenders, 46 Crews, and 169 Other Assigned. Today's Incident Report states: "Today crews on the ground experienced a warmer and drier weather pattern. No fire activity was observed across the incident. Vegetation began to dry throughout the day making it susceptible to ignition. Humidity recovery will continue to decline. All areas of the incident are in recovery phase. Crews are responding to service calls, increasing mop-up depth, and removing hazardous trees. A safety risk still remains in the fire area associated with heavy equipment operating near personnel for fire suppression repair." Thanks to the Unified Command with CAL FIRE and the Lassen National Forest, who are managing the Park Fire Incident at this time, as well as all of the support services and agencies involved “Tehama County Sheriff's Office, California Highway Patrol, California Conservation Corps, Bureau of Land Management, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Sierra Pacific Industries, Collins Pine Company, California Office of Emergency Services, California National Guard, California Department of Transportation.” Included is an important note: “As you return home from evacuations, please remember to keep an evacuation plan with your family. For more information on emergency readiness, please visit www.ready.gov.” Highways in Mineral are open.
►Heroes Defending Mineral
Heroes take many forms during times of emergency, and the past month has brought us demonstrations of this heroic effort by many in Mineral. Our Volunteer Fire Department and their Support Team was here long beyond the rest to support the firefighters as they came into Mineral to stage at the Battle Creek Meadows Ranch, the Lodge and gas station parking lots, Schneider Ballfield, and Cal-Trans. As temporary employees of CAL FIRE, Chief Al, Dan, and John hard-covered Mineral and served as the only Structure Protection Crew here for several days. Our local Postmaster, Jan Gravier, made sure residents who needed their medicines from the mail got them.
Two days before the fire topped Mineral Summit, hose that had been laid along Mineral Avenue was used to run sprinklers all along the Ranch fence line 24/7. Water District General Manager John Frehse directed raw creek water into the tank to meet the new demand. Water Board member Brad Koeberer assisted Frehse with personal notifications to those not evacuated and later posting Boil W
The Battle Creek Ranch took many measures to protect Mineral throughout the incident and are now reviewing what can be done to harden Mineral for the future, as well. They experienced 100 acres of burn in the Upper Meadow as part of the “back fire” or prescribed burn to defend Mineral. We are very lucky to have Battle Creek Ranch meadows along the South of Mineral. For all of the heroes, local and visiting, we thank you for your brilliant efforts to defend and support Mineral and our residents.
THANK YOU TO EACH OF YOU WHO KEPT NEIGHBORS AND OFFICIALS INFORMED, PROVIDED ESSENTIAL SERVICES AND STAYED OUT OF THE WAY WHEN ASKED, IN SUPPORT OF OUR FIREFIGHTERS & THEIR SUPPORT SERVICES, AND TO THOSE WHO FOUGHT THE FIRE ON THE FRONT LINES OR IN DEFENSE AHEAD AND ALSO TO THOSE WHO CAME BACK TO SUPPORT OUR LOCAL LODGES, BUSINESSES, POST OFFICE & ORGANIZATIONS

Most Properties in Some Areas Didn’t Pass the 100’ Defensible Space Test During the Emergency
►Yellow Placards
When the Mandatory Evacuation Order was placed, defensible-space assessment teams placed yellow placards on properties throughout Mineral. These placards should remain until the fire is 100% contained. They provide information vital to firefighters: 1) if there is a water source on the property; 2) if the property has 100’ of defensible space; and 3) if and how many people are present.
►Lessons Learned
Several community members are gathering and reviewing protocols for various activities during an emergency. In support of those efforts, what do you wish the community, local support services or the news media had communicated to you during the fire? What do you think we can do individually or collectively to improve our local processes? What do we want to ask our local governments for, in support of our efforts? Please email your thoughts to mineralcalifornia@gmail.com so we can share them on our website.
Supervisor Pati Nolen Visits Breakfast Club to Hear What the Community Needs and to Share the Latest Information
►Supervisor Pati Nolen and Local American Red Cross Representative Join Mineral Breakfast Club
Thanks to Supervisor Pati Nolen for joining us for breakfast club on Sunday and sharing an update on many County activities that affect Mineral's residents. She asked residents for suggestions of what we could do better in the future and about the community needs. Patty invited Caedy Minoletti, the head of our local American Red Cross to join as well. Caedy shared with us information about the American Red Cross disaster relief in the region. They are willing to support us with future disaster relief preparation. In addition, she shared that ARC would benefit from local volunteers and giving and will provide information in the future on how we can support them in supporting us. A great discussion with several lists of ideas emerged for future hardening of Mineral in case of fire. Ideas discussed included re-adding an emergency siren to the community, reviewing supporting animals during times of emergency, restoring the land to its natural state, the need for more yard waste disposal solutions to remove fire fuels, where we go during evacuation, how we can add support for emergency services ahead of time during Mineral and how all of the various County organizations have been working together to do what it takes to save and preserve Mineral and neighboring areas. Thanks Patty, Caedy and all of the locals and visitors who joined us for this large group, grateful to be back in Mineral and at Lassen Mineral Lodge Restaurant on Sundays. We are all very lucky to have such leaders acting on behalf of Mineral’s interests. Although a very resilient and independent community, we are all happy to be coordinating and working together. Thank you to CalFIRE, Tehama County, the Sheriff's Office and OES for everything they've been doing to support Mineral and keep our communities safe in many ways.

LOCAL NEWS
Lassen Mineral Lodge Restaurant and Store is Open!
►Lassen Mineral Lodge Restaurant & Store Open
As of Aug. 18th, the Lodge is back open! Thanks to the Lodge for serving our local heroes with their parking lot - first the residents until mandatory evacuation and then the thousands of firefighters and support services while defending Mineral. After, the parking lot has been full of trucks continuing the greatly appreciated work in Mineral. The losses to the Lodge during this time have been significant, including losing all monthly campers, hotel guests, and restaurant & store business. They’re still going, so let’s support them as they return. Although some are going down the hill for the Winter, the Breakfast Club is still on Sundays around 10:30 AM. Mineral Lodge, the residents & visitors are glad you’re back for us and the many people supporting Mineral currently.

►SO MUCH WATER USED Aug. 6-8, Raw Creek Water Ran Into the Tank to Support Firefighting
As the fire drew near to Mineral and the situation looked dire, water tenders tapped into Mineral’s hydrants. In addition, firefighters ran sprinklers along Mineral Avenue. Unable to filter enough water to meet this large increase in demand, General Manager John Frehse dispensed with filtration of water on Tuesday, Aug. 6th. On the 8th, Frehse re-started filtration and hyperchlorinated the system. A few days later, he flushed sediment out of the hydrants. By the 17th, the system had passed bacteriological testing twice. At 6 PM, Frehse lifted the Boil Water Order-–only 2 days after the Mandatory Evacuation had been lifted. In the meantime, the Board of Directors, led by President Stephanie Dennis, held two meetings in the County Chambers in Red Bluff. Our Water District has certainly gone above and beyond to support Mineral during this challenging time.
►Boil Water Order Has Been Lifted
A Boil Water Order for MCWD customers was placed on the afternoon of August 6th. Before raw creek water began running into the tank, everyone who had not evacuated was personally notified. A few days later, the postings were on every door. The Boil Water Order was lifted on the 17th at 6 PM. Blue flags are flying once again in Mineral!
Supporting Mill Creek Resort - The New Mill Creek Resort T-Shirt is Coming Soon to Their Online Store
►Thankfully Mill Creek Resort and Community Cabins Were Saved!
On Aug. 22nd, Mill Creek Resort sent out an email saying "We’ve been in disbelief of what has transpired in the past 3ish weeks. As many of you know, our beloved Mill Creek community was recently impacted by the Park wildfire. This sudden evacuation has hit us hard, both emotionally and financially. But in the spirit of community and resilience, we’ve returned home in the past couple days and are working hard to get things reopened. Reservations for the rest of the 2024 season and into February 2025 are open! After such a heartbreaking loss we ask for your support to help us get back on our feet. Like any small business, being closed for close to a month is overwhelming to say the least. Our resort was left mostly untouched, but fire did arrive at the south side of our property. Thankfully, this was a back burn operation which left everything in really good shape. Driving into Mill Creek on the 172 highway is thankfully close to how it was before the fires." They also announced their first T-shirt in years, which will soon be available on their website with their other merch such as the MCR Property Map and where you can also subscribe to their newsletter (scroll to the bottom of the home page).
Residents Discovered the PEZ Collection Displayed at Red Bluff Post Office While Repeatedly Trying to Pick Up Mail
►Where Was/Is Our Mail?
During Mandatory Evacuation, residents were not able to access their mail for up to three weeks in most cases. Residents were evacuated west via the 36 to Red Bluff, and many stayed in Red Bluff, Redding or Chico. Mail was routed to the Chester Post Office, which was not accessible without driving 4+ hours through neighboring cities or flying to Reno and driving to Chester. Postal Customer Service suggested that customers submit mail forwarding forms, which would take up to 2 weeks to activate, and would deprive residents of their mail for up to 6 weeks after being evacuated. All could have been remedied by having mail held at the Red Bluff Post Office. Those on the rural route between Mineral and Chester were still getting their mail. If some of your mail is missing, check with the Mineral Post Office, the Chester Post Office, the Red Bluff Post Office, and Post Office Customer Care in San Francisco.
Blue Flags Indicate There Are No Restrictions on Water Use (A Good Time to Plan for the Future)
►MCWD Board of Directors Agree to Explore Grants to Support Mineral
In response to a public comment about upcoming potential grant opportunities, the Board agreed to explore them for both Mineral & the District. Recently significant expenses of various types have been required in support of defending Mineral, so additional support would be helpful. This time has also highlighted community needs that might result in opportunities for preserving the water during emergencies in the future, as well as ongoing needs for the Water District as well as the community.
Produce, Snacks and Water Which We Imagine Was Was Delivered to the Lodge Parking Lot, but They Didn’t Order It; Eventually, It Was Moved to the Porch for Shade
►Offers of Donations Coming In to Support Future Emergency Services in Mineral
Since we’ve been back in Mineral, several people have offered resources and introductions to additional funding in support of establishing emergency services resources in Mineral. This could support future firefighting throughout the area by having what is needed when it is needed. As seen by the many trucks in the Lodge parking lot, along the streets, at the gas station and food at the Lodge parking lot and porch, it appears that more staging area would be beneficial. Perhaps Mineral has spaces that could be utilized, and with some coordination, we can soon accept some of these offers for resources, training and funding, which will be included in an upcoming document to be shared for discussion.
The Mineral Lodge Parking Lot Has Been a Place to Stop, Rest, Eat and Coordinate Before Heading In or Out of the Fire
►Firewise Monthly Meeting
Each month, a team call is held online between the Resource Conservation District of Tehama County and the greater Mineral area Firewise members. Current and upcoming services supported by grants are discussed, along with the community’s needs and status of delivery of those services. Led by Jim Richardson, our local Firewise team encourages residents to create defensible space around their homes and supports volunteer efforts to do so where needed when residents are not able or public spaces need community efforts. The group anticipates meeting to explore community needs and grant opportunities available to returning communities impacted by the Park Fire. What support or services would you like to see for Mineral? Please email mineralcalifornia@gmail.com with your thoughts so we can document and share them.
►Mineral Community Receives Grant from Tehama County Arts Council and California Arts Council to Support the Mineral Post Office Postcard Project - Tehama County Arts Council and California Arts Council has approved the Mineral California arts grant request to support our local post office with a postcard project! The Council's Board Chair also says "We are sending our strongest wishes for a good outcome during this horrible Park Fire." Thank you to the Councils and we look forward to working on this project in support of our community and local post office. Postcards will be made available to encourage Mineral Post Office visits and local purchases of stamps.
►From the Park’s Education & Youth Programs
Per the Dacite newsletter, Volcano Adventure Camp will officially re-open on August 26 and remain so through September 21, 2024. Many thanks to North Maintenance and Education Staffs for bringing it back to life. Education staff are also busy scheduling fall field trips for schools, now through November 1, 2024. Travel assistance grants are still available. If you know of any interested schools please have them email lavo_education@nps.gov.

Disposal of Yard Waste Continues to Be a Problem
►What Do We Do with the Dry, Flammable Yard Waste that Remains After This Hot Summer?!
According to Cathy of Green Waste of Tehama County, customers' yard waste can be put in their trash bags and put in the trash bins at the (former) Mineral School parking lot. However, this has been filling the bins too full so that there is no room for trash. Quite a bit of yard waste has been stacked up since bins were expected to remain for a month after the June Dumpster Day event. Many residents are more eager than ever to clear 100' of defensible space, since so many homes were graded by CDF assessment teams as not having 100' of defensible space. It seems it would be a good use of funds to support volunteers willing to dispose of yard waste and avoid potential fires from local fire fuels should embers return. Since we are not supposed to take yard waste to County facilities outside of our County, those who can properly dispose of yard waste might consider taking bags left alongside roads and/or in coordination with neighbors.
Green Waste of Tehama County Customers Used to Have the Option to Drop Off Trash at the Park HQ; Now It’s at the Former Mineral School Parking Lot, But No Yard Waste Options
►Weird Weather in the Skies
On June 15, 2024, we added photos to our website because of unusual skies above Mineral which were seen while taking photos of the water status flag at the 172 entrance to Cool Air. On August 17, 2024, it was noticed that similar images were included in Shasta resident Dane Wigington’s GeoEngineering Watch video. On Aug. 18th, more weird skies were seen from Hwy. 36. Although the reasons for such odd images are unknown, Dane’s website, which can be found at www.geoengineeringwatch.org, hosts discussion of possible originations of these patterns so that residents can research it themselves.
Fire Breaks are Restored to Minimize Future Danger
►Restoring the Lands After Creating Fire Breaks
Crews are now restoring lands where fire breaks were dozed so as to spread out fire fuels. First, larger machines come in and spread it around and then human crews of around a dozen people come in and manually cut limbs and rake it out across the land. What an amazing effort, which is greatly appreciated. Seems like a good time to consider how we could remove the fire fuels.
Crews Manually Cut and Spread Materials Across the Land
(Can we get them back to rake in May?!)
PRESERVATION
►Defending Homes & Properties Against Fires
Many fire defense professionals who have volunteered with the Mineral Raking Club have told us how important it is to clear space around our homes, trim branches, and thin trees in order to provide the best defense against flying embers when fire threatens. Find more information here.
►Deck Restorations Can Include Fireproofing
If you are fixing up your deck this summer (perhaps to clean off the ash debris), consider refinishing it with a waterproof coating. This can make a big difference in protecting your home if and when embers fall in the future.
While Evacuating, Embers and Ashes Were Falling; Some Burned Weed Cloth and Pine Needles in Mineral
►WE GOT LUCKY - Let's Keep Raking
If luck is preparation and opportunity, then thanks to the hard work of Mineral residents throughout the year and to the enormous firefighting effort by CAL FIRE and the Lassen National Forest in coordination with many county agencies and colleagues around the state, we got lucky. Residents report burned, melted weed cloth on their property, as well as blackened burn spots. Giant embers were seen as we were evacuating. This is a great reminder on how important it is to remove fire fuels such as branches, pine needles, wood and anything that can burn from near your structures or trees. Raking Club member Jim Richardson continues each week to help neighbors who aren't able by raking their properties for them and inspires us all to do whatever we can to “harden” and make Mineral more resilient in the face of fire. When we consider how much money is spent fighting fires, to consider that buildings can be saved by raking and cleaning up, it seems like a great idea for our homes and to help our neighbors with their properties, too.
